What are online Studio Pingo Summer Camps like?
It is our goal to create an exciting and engaging online version of our traditional summer camps for the summer of 2020.
Each work of art begins as students draw from a black and white line image drawn by Mr. G. Color is added based on reference to a color photo of the same image. During this time, students will receive detailed instruction that will help them grow immensely in their artistic abilities. Students work at their own pace and are able to freely ask questions and receive individualized feedback and instruction. |
When are the camps?
Instead of signing up for a week-long camp, your registration provides for 5 to 15 hours of live online instruction that will be offered to different age groups at different times of the day during the weeks of:
June 29 - July 3
July 27 - July 31
August 10 - August 14
July 27 - July 31
August 10 - August 14
During each week, there will be two, one-hour long sessions per day geared for different grade levels. Students may join in for one or both sessions in a day to use their 5 to 15 hours provided by the registration. This will allow you to be very flexible with when you log in for instructional sessions. You do not need to register for these sessions...just log in to join the camp when you'd like! Sessions are scheduled as follows:
1st - 2nd Grades: 8:00 - 9:00 AM / 12:00 - 1:00 PM
3rd - 4th Grades: 9:00 - 10:00 AM / 1:00 - 2:00 PM
5th Grade and Up: 10:00 - 11:00 AM / 2:00 - 3:00 PM
3rd - 4th Grades: 9:00 - 10:00 AM / 1:00 - 2:00 PM
5th Grade and Up: 10:00 - 11:00 AM / 2:00 - 3:00 PM
What is included in the camp?
Each online camp package includes 5 hours of small group, live instruction delivered through Google Meet, three reference photos and line drawings, and enough supplies to use during the camp sessions! This year, you will get to keep all of the leftover supplies that are not used during the camp session!
What kinds of art materials will be used?
Studio Pingò online summer camps will focus on your choice of colored pencils, acrylic paints, and/or oil pastels. You may sign up for one or all three of the media choices.
Do I need anything else to be part of the camp?Students will need to use a computer with a camera or webcam to participate in the camp. After working through distance learning in school we hope that this is a simple solution that we have all grown more comfortable with!

How will we get the supplies included with instruction?
We will have scheduled pick-up days outside of Jefferson Hills Intermediate School on the Saturday morning (from 10:00 AM to Noon) before each camp session begins: June 27, July 25, and August 8. If you are unable to pick up your supply kits at those times, contact us to arrange another option.
What will the subject matter be for the artwork?
All artwork will be created based on photos and line drawings that are created by Mr. Gebhardt and chosen based on media and grade level. Some pictures may look better in colored pencils and others may be better completed with pastels. Certain images are better for younger students while others provide a challenge to older students.
How does the online camp compare to the traditional camp?
We strive to replicate the traditional camp experience through an online learning model. The details below show a simple comparison that reveals that the cost, amount of instruction, and materials are basically the same. The added benefit to the online camp is that students get to keep leftover materials!

Why are camps being held online?Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools have been officially closed by order of the governor and department of education. This closure includes the use of the building for any extra-curricular activities. We were hopeful that this restriction would be lifted as Allegheny county moved to the yellow and green phases, but there is no indication that schools will be opened prior to the start of the 2020-21 school year. Without a location to hold camps, we decided to create an online camp that would be very similar to what we would have done in person.
